About Purdue University

Purdue University is a university in West Lafayette, which is a city in Tippecanoe County, situated in the US state of Indiana, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 29 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the most populated city in the state. The city was named in honor of General Lafayette, a French military hero who fought with the Continental Army, during the American Revolutionary War.

Purdue University was founded on May 6, 1869, as a land-grant university, thanks to Lafayette businessman John Purdue, who donated land and money, for the establishment of a college of science, agriculture and technology, in his name. First classes were held on September 16, 1874, with 6 instructors and 39 students, today, Purdue having the 2nd largest student body of any university in the state, as well as one of the largest international student populations of any public university in USA.

The university offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 200 major areas of study, its aviation technology and aeronautical engineering programs remaining among the highest rated and most competitive in the world. Twenty-two Purdue graduates have become astronauts, fact which brought the university the nickname of the `Cradle of Astronauts`.

The athletic teams from Purdue are known as the Purdue Boilermakers, who compete in 18 varsity sports, in the NCAA Division I/I-A, in football, basketball, tennis, cross country, golf volleyball and several other sports. The university is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, and played a central role in its creation. The Boilermakers are perhaps best known for their achievements in men’s and women’s basketball, in which they won more Big Ten Championships, than any other conference school, the men’s basketball team being considered to be among the best teams in the country, beginning the 2010 season with 14-0, the best start in the school’s history.

Since it first opened its doors to students, Purdue has produced a series of notable alumni, among the most resonant names on the list being: Robert Altenkirch - President of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Jayanta Kumar Ghosh - World-renowned statistician, Neil Armstrong - Gemini 8, Apollo 11; first man to walk on the Moon, Ward Cunningham - inventor of the wiki concept, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
